With intriguing, high-tone aromatics and concentrated fruit, the 2019 Grouch elegantly walks the line between power and poise. --- Our flagship Rhône style red, Grouch is made with select parcels of Syrah fruit from our west facing bl...
Estate fruit comprised of select bunches of dry-grown, close-planted Shiraz sourced from our west-facing block and co-fermented with Marsanne from our ‘Rhône Block’. Fruit was handpicked; whole bunches of Marsanne (5%) were layered at the bottom of a single one-tonne stainless steel vat and covered with destemmed, whole berry Shiraz fruit. This single vat underwent a 5-day presoak with hand plunging to encourage wild fermentation. After fermentation, the wine was basket-pressed and transferred by gravity to barrel for maturation in a mix of French oak barriques (20% new) for 15 months. No fining or filtration.
Tasting Note
Intensely coloured and perfumed, the nose shows complex aromas of black fruit, liquorice and earthy minerality that translate seamlessly to the palate. The palate is full-bodied and impeccably balanced with vibrant acidity, fine, firm tannins and a long finish of black plum and dried herbs. Still a veritable youngster, this wine has serious cellaring potential. We recommend drinking within 10 years, but certainly wouldn’t fault you for enjoying it now.
